On this tour we will explore the old Beijing that so captivated Marco Polo on his travels through China. We will see the remains of Beijing once-glorious city wall, torn down to make way for roads and subways. The highlight of this tour will be exploring the principle center of old Beijing, the Hutong. Hutongs are narrow alley streets set up of courtyard houses. The hutong was the nerve center of daily life, and is where much of local culture originated from. You should see them while you can, because they are rapidly disappearing as a result of Beijing frantic modernization. So please join us on a journey through Beijing’s treasured and beautiful past.

TOUR DETAILS:

1. We will pick you up from your hotel between 7:30-8:00am, and then head to our first destination.

2. We will go to see the remains of the old city wall, which were uprooted to make way for the second ring road and subway line. The parts we will see today give you a clue at how monumental the entire wall was. If you see a subway stop or major intersection ending with a name of "men," then it means it is a gate of the old city wall. We will be there for about 1 hour.

3. Then we will stop at the Lama Temple, Beijing's biggest and best Buddhist Temple, and outside of Tibet, the best Buddhist temple in China. Keep a look out for one of the largest Buddha statues in the world in the rear area of the Temple. We will stop to smell the incense hear for about 45 minutes.

4. We will then make the short walk to the Confucius Temple, Beijing's shrine to China's greatest philosopher. Even today the teachings of Confucius holds a heavy influence on the Chinese population. We will then stop for a Chinese lunch to refuel ourselves for the activities ahead.

5. You then have a chance to get some traditional handicrafts and curios at a local market. Be sure to bargain hard, because you can often get something at half the asking price. Our guide will give you a hand!

6. Traveling by rickshaw, we will take a glimpse into the past as we take a tour of Beijing's hutongs. The narrow alleys of the hutong were the nerve center of daily life in old Beijing. This quaint and peaceful part of Beijing is what makes the city so appealing and charming. The tour will be about 40 minutes.

7. After seeing the delightful Panda at Panda Garden, we will drop you off at your hotel, ending your tour.
