TOUR A3: Beijing Daily Bus Day Tour
Rugged Simatai Great Wall
Simatai
[Breaking News - Beijing, June 11, 2010. We are sorry that this
route is temporarily close due to the Simatai renovation project
by the local government starting from June 17, 2010.
However, we have successfully managed to continue our Great Wall
from Simatai to Jinshanling, by which you will still hike a
portion of Simatai and walk to Jinshanling for three to four
hours. Please go to
Bus
Tour A4 to sign up for the hike.
You can also check our private tours to the Great Wall by going
to the Great Wall hiking homepage.
The Simatai section of the Great Wall
is one of the few sections to retain the original appearance of
the Great Wall. Incorporating a variety of characteristics of
other sections of the Great Wall, Simatai also displays some
unique features of its own. It is often described with the
following five words: perilous, dense, diverse, artful, and
peculiar.
With densely dispersed watchtowers snaking along the mountain
ridges, Simatai looks spectacular. In 1987, the Great Wall at
Simatai was acknowledged by UNESCO as one the World Heritage
Sites. When you visit the Simatai Great Wall, you will witness
in person the magnificence and glory of this man-made
masterpiece.

TOUR DETAILS:
1. Between 7:30-8:00 am our English-speaking guide
will come to your hotel to pick you up, and we will
make the 2 hour drive to the Great Wall at Simatai.
2. You will have about 3 hours to explore the
Simatai Great Wall. The Simatai section of the Great
Wall, with its 35 watchtowers, is the only part of
the wall that retains all the original features of
the Ming Dynasty wall. The bricks used to build the
walls here were stamped with the date on which they
were made and the code numbers of the armies that
made them. Ingeniously conceived and uniquely
designed, this section of Great Wall, inimitable and
diversified, has incorporated the different
characteristics of other sections of the Great Wall.
Built on precipitous mountain ridges, there are many
places that are unmatched among other sections of
Great Wall. The 'Heavenly Ladder' and the 'Sky
Bridge' are particularly dangerous - they can make
even the most intrepid tremble with fear.
3. For lunch we will stop at a local farmers
restaurant near the wall where we will have a
traditional Chinese-style meal. It will take us
about 40 minutes for lunch.
4. On our drive back to Beijing, we will stop for a
little bit at a traditional market, where it is not
unusual to get some great bargains, even at less
than 50% of the original asking price. If you are
unsure how to haggle in Chinese, your guide will be
more than happy to help you out!
5. You will be dropped off at your hotel before
6:00pm, so you will have time for dinner. This will
complete your day on the Great Wall.
