About Zhangjiajie and Avatar
Hallelujah Mountain
Many of you may or may not know, Zhangjiajie National
Forest Park is the prototype for various elements in the
movie ‘Avatar,’ including the ‘Hallelujah Mountains,’ which
has recently been renamed from the “Southern Sky Column.”
Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic. The film
is set in the year 2154, when humans are mining a precious
mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush moon of a gas
giant in the Alpha Centauri star system The expansion of
the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a
local tribe of Na'vi—a sentient humanoid species indigenous
to Pandora
The site was first visited by Hollywood photographers
in 2008 and many pictures became the prototype for the hit
movie “Avatar”. Standing 1074 meters above the sea level,
the stunning peak is said to have inspired to create the
floating “Hallelujah Mountains” on the fictional planet
of Pandora.
The Chinese tourist bosses has renamed this mountain
to bring more tourist to the Zhangjiajie City. Zhangjiajie
City is a relatively new name to China adopted in 1994 after
the National Forest park in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area in
order to give more prominence and after being designated
a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The name Zhangjiajie
can be translated to “Zhang family homeland” from the three
Chinese characters; Zhang being a common surname in China,
Jia as family, and Jie as homeland.
Its soaring steeple of rock topped by a small oasis
of trees looks straight out of the 3D blockbuster
Avatar.
But this is no special effects illusion; it's a
real-life tower of quartz-sandstone deep in the rugged
mountain terrain of southern Hunan in China.
The 3,544ft Southern Sky Column is one of 3,000 in the
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and became the
inspiration for the magical 'floating peaks' in James
Cameron's film. The movie's director said during a press
conference last December that the "Hallelujah Mountains"
were modeled after Huangshan Mountain in China's Anhui
Province. He said he sent his crew to the site during
preparations for the movie's alien planet scenes, but
later that month a Chinese Internet user reported the
original model for the mountain was not Huangshan but
the South Pillar of the Heaven in Zhangjiajie. He made
the determination by comparing photos of the South
Pillar of the Heaven and the movie's "Hallelujah
Mountain". The "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie is
modeled after the South Pillar of the Heaven, on which a
major cameraman for the movie spent four days shooting
photos.
A national park spokesman said: 'Many pictures become
prototypes for various elements in the 'Avatar' movie,
including the 'Hallelujah Mountains'.' Now as film fans
flock to see the column, the column has had its named
officially changed to 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain'. With
Great Wall Adventure Club tourists can now join a
'Magical tour to Avatar-Pandora' or a 'Miracle tour’ to
Avatar's floating mountain.
