Shanghai Study Tour
-- Field Trips to
Shanghai's Famous Companies
Featuring Volkswagen, General
Motors, Canature and Bao Steel Co.
PLAN A: Volkswagen and
Shanghai GM
Volkswagen
Formed in 1984,
Shanghai Volkswagen plant was by the
far the winner among all new JVs, as it produced cars that could
function as taxis, vehicles for government officials and
transport for the newly emerging business elite.
It used to be the largest carmaker in China before GM started
manufacturing cars in Shanghai.
Now, the implementation of a sustainable strategy for the future
began in 2021 with the largest initiative for electro mobility
in the country's automotive history. The beginning of the market
was marked by the launch of the e-up !*, followed in 2021 by the
Golf GTE* and the Audi A3 e-tron*. The electromobility strategy,
which is tailored to the Chinese market, stipulates that the
joint ventures of the Volkswagen Group will successively launch
40 new locally produced plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles by
2025, in addition to existing and other import models. China
today sets the automotive trend of the future.
General Motors
Formed in 1997, GM, its subsidiaries
and its joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Cadillac,
Chevrolet, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang and Wuling
brands. GM has 11 joint ventures and
two wholly owned foreign enterprises as well as more than 58,000
employees in China. GM, along with its joint ventures, offers
the broadest lineup of vehicles and brands among automakers in
China. Products are sold under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet,
Baojun and Wuling nameplates. In 2021, GM and its joint ventures
sold more than 3.64 million vehicles in China.
