1. Your driver and guide will
pick you up from your hotel between 8:00-8:30am, thus
beginning your days tour.
2. Our first stop today will be at the
Big Wild Goose Pagoda,
a pagoda surrounded by a still functioning Buddhist temple
(named Da Cien Temple). The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of
the most famous Buddhist pagodas in China. The Pagoda was
built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) for the study of
Buddhist scriptures. Although it has been attacked by
centuries of weather, war and seismic activity, which
destroyed most of the original material of the structure, a
pagoda by this name and style still exists on the site. (1
hr)
3. Then you can unwind a bit by taking a leisurely stroll on
the Xian city wal.
It's the most complete city wall that has survived in China,
as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive
systems in the world. Xi'an City Wall was erected in the
14th century Ming Dynasty, under the regime of Emperor Zhu
Yuanzhang. When Zhu Yuanzhang captured Huizhou, long before
the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, he was admonished by
a hermit named Zhu Sheng, who told him to "build high walls,
store abundant provisions and take your time in proclaiming
yourself emperor." If you like, you have the option of
renting a bike or a rickshaw on the wall in order to cover
more ground in a shorter time. (1 hr)
4. Next, well indulge in a little shopping, and since Xian
has seen so much history and activity, youre sure to find
something interesting at the market well go to. Like in
every market in China, bargaining is the norm. If youre a
little shy your guide will be happy to lend you a hand! (30
min)
5. We will then take a break for some lunch. For lunch we
will be having some Shaanxi cuisine, the provincial style of
this area. Shaanxi Cuisine, also known as Qin Cuisine, is
the representative culinary achievement in the northwest
China. It makes frequent use of salt, vinegar, capsicum and
garlic, making the savory flavor of sour, spicy and
fragrant. (30 min)
6. In order to learn about Xians epic history, well go to
the Shaanxi History Museum, which is perhaps the best museum
in China. Since Shaanxi, the province Xian is in, is the
cradle of Chinese civilization, this
museum takes on a
special importance. The museum is divided into 3 main
exhibition halls. The Basic Exhibition Hall is composed of
the No 1 exhibition hall, the No 2 exhibition hall and the
No 3 exhibition hall, marked by time order. The No 1
exhibition on the first floor hall displays the articles
used during the period from 1.7 million years ago to 206 BC
of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC). This exhibition contains
rough stone tools used by the ape man, the pottery, bronze
sacrificial vessels, weapons and terracotta figures. By
visiting the No 2 Exhibition Hall on the second floor, you
will gain a general understanding of the historical process
from 206 BC in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD) to 589 AD in
the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386-589). To the west
of the Basic Exhibition Hall lies the Theme Exhibition Hall.
The exhibitions in this hall are often theme-oriented to
show the history or the culture relics of Shaanxi Province,
such as the 'Shaanxi Bronze Ware Exhibition', the 'Shaanxi
Pottery Figure Exhibition' and the 'Buddhist Culture Relic
Exhibition'. The East Exhibition Hall, equal in size to the
Theme Exhibition Hall, is also on the first floor and to the
east of the basic hall. It is used for contemporary
exhibitions of high quality. Exhibitions of the frescos, the
culture relics, the folkways, the fine arts and calligraphy
are conducted continuously. (1.5 hr)
7. Well head to the center of the city to visit the
Bell
Tower and Drum Tower. Standing at the crossing of the East,
West, South, and North avenues in city proper, the Bell
Tower is a symbol of Xi' an. The tower was originally built
in 1348, toward the end of the Yuan Dynasty, and was moved
to the present site in 1552, during the Ming Dynasty. It was
rebuilt and enlarged during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
From the top the Bell Tower, visitors can get a bird's eye
view of the surrounding areas and the building's
brightly-decorated eaves. The Drum Tower, across Bell Tower
and Drum Tower Square, to the northwest of the Bell Tower,
is a similar structure to the Bell Tower. It was erected in
1380, also during the Ming Dynasty. The Drum Tower got its
name from the huge drum hung within it. The bell was struck
at dawn and the drum was beaten at sunset to indicate the
end of the day. Inside the Drum Tower is a drum museum,
where a variety of drums are on display, some of which can
be dated back from thousands of years. A kind of drum show
is performed here everyday. The top of the tower commands a
panoramic view of the city. (30 min)
8. Lastly, well stroll through the Great Mosque, Xians
biggest mosque. Xian has one of the largest Chinese Muslims
populations, so obviously this mosque is extremely
important. Well cap off your time in Xian with a walk
through the Muslim Quarter. Surrounding the Great Mosque is
the famous Muslim Quarter in Xian. Here you can find many
Muslim restaurants and food stands, and shops selling
traditional handicrafts. Almost all the local food and
snacks are also available at the Muslim Quarter. (40 min)
9. By 5:30pm, you will be dropped off at your hotel,
allowing you to have time for dinner and any other evening
activities you want to do during your time in Xian. If
youre looking for something to do this evening you can sign
