The Xiangshuihu (which means “Sounding lake” in English) Great Wall is located in eastern Dazhenyu village (west of Mutianyu Great Wall), and west of Moyashike and east of Lianyunling. Like Jinshanling, it is partially restored, but also allows enough of the “Wild Wall” to shine through, thereby making it more of an authentic part of the Great Wall than others (such as Badaling). Because it is not as well known as some other sections closer to Beijing, it is a good choice to visit if you wish to avoid hordes of crowds and hawkers. The Xiangshuihu section of the Great Wall gives you the solitude and serenity that will make any Great Wall experience a memorable one.
The restored section features many watchtowers, not unlike those of the Jinshanling or the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. In the late spring and summer months, the forest surrounding the wall is a lush green, making this part of the wall a great spot for photos and maybe even a picnic!
Because some of the wall has recently been restored, those following sections are in very good condition. The restored sections are mostly in the east end of Xiangshuihu. If you pass the restored sections, you will reach the unrestored (“Wild Wall”) at Moyashike, which for being unrestored is in pretty fine condition. However, some areas of this part of the wall are unclimbable and should be avoided.
The unrestored area starts with a short downhill section followed by a long uphill section, the summit of which marks the start of the spur wall and the Moyashike park section, which is covered in a separate review. The view from this point is quite good. Most of the view is the Great Wall and nature, as very few buildings or other man-made objects are visible. Up to this point, all of the Xiangshuihu Great Wall is relatively easy and safe to climb.
