Day 1: Beijing-Gubeikou-Jinshanling (L, D, 10 kms,
4-5 hours of hiking)
Your guide will meet you at your hotel between
7:30-9:30am, and by private sedan or minivan we will head to the
Great Wall at Gubeikou to start our hike. The Gubeikou Great Wall
has long been an important pass of great military significance on
the route to the capital city of Beijing. The Gubeikou Great Wall
was built along a mountain range, rising and falling along its
length. The Gubeikou Great Wall has kept its original appearance.
Unlike other sections of the Great Wall, Gubeikou also has some
historical sites like temples and temporary imperial palaces. It is
suitable for hiking and photography.
Today, the famous Gubeikou Great Wall stretches for more than 40km.
There are 14 beacon towers, 143 watchtowers, 16 strategic passes,
three citadels and many other military instillations. Many of them
are famous cultural relics, such as the Big Flower Beacon Tower of
the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Fairy Tower, the General Tower, and the
dominant Wangjing Tower.
After a few hours of hiking Gubeikou we will eventually cross over
into the Jinshanling Great Wall. The Jinshanling Great Wall is one
of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, maintaining much of
its original features. It got its name because it was built on the
Greater and Lesser Jinshan (Gold Mountain) Ranges. A tablet with the
Chinese inscription for Jinshanling Great Wall was set into this
section. The Jinshanling Great Wall has not been repaired since
1570. It is a remote and relatively isolated section of the Great
Wall. As there are relatively few tourists at the Jinshanling Great
Wall, it is a good place to explore on foot. If you are looking for
breathtaking views with a relatively peaceful walk, then the
Jinshanling Great Wall is a great place to start!
As it starts to get dark, we’ll descend the Great Wall and spend the
night at the Jinshan Hotel, which is located at the foot of the
Jinshanling Great Wall (a 20 minute walk). Dinner will be had at the
hotel. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep, as you’ll want to wake
up early in order to catch the sunrise over the Great Wall.

Day 2: Jianshanling-Second Valley (the West
Wing of Simatai) -Beijing
(B, L, 8 kms, 3 hours of
hiking)
After
an early morning start, breakfast, and viewing the sunrise over the
Great Wall, we’ll begin the second portion of your Great Wall hike.
Starting from eastern Jinshaling, we’ll soon cross into the western
portion of the Simatai Great Wall (the eastern portion has been
permanently closed). The Simatai Great Wall is celebrated for its
steepness and intactness. Constructed under the supervision of Qi
Jiguang, a famous general of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it is the
only Great Wall section that still has the original appearance
during the Ming Dynasty.
The eastern portion of the Simatai Great Wall has 16 watchtowers and
was constructed on the steep ridge of the mountain. It looks like a
winding dragon jumping out of the lake. Among them the most
distinctive watchtowers are the Fairy Maiden Tower and the Wangjing
Tower.
After about 2.5 hours of hiking we will descend the Great Wall and
drive back to Beijing, arriving at approximately 12:00pm. The great
thing about this program is that you’ll have the rest of the
afternoon and evening to sightsee, explore or even catch a flight or
train to your next destination. If you desire we offer many evening
Beijing tours where you can experience Peking Opera, Kung Fu,
Chinese acrobatics and much more!
