Your English-speaking guide
will pick you up at your hotel between 7:30-8:00am. From
there we will then make the 2-hour drive to the Great Wall
at Badaling. When you see a photo
from the Great Wall of China, chances are it is from the
section at Badaling. The Badaling section of the Great Wall
is the best preserved and the most popular one amongst all
the sections. It is more than 1,000 meters (3281 ft) above
sea level, and commands a strategic position for
transportation and defense that served it well in ancient
times.
Badaling, literally meaning "reach eight directions", got
its name because the maze of its ridges stretches in all
directions. It is easily accessible and has easy walking
conditions. Looking to climb an adventurous, peaceful,
crowd-free part of the Great Wall? The more well-known,
‘renovated’ walls are not the only sections that are easy to
visit on a day or half day trip from Beijing. Today you will
discover the un-renovated section of Badaling, also called
Shixiaguan by local farmers. It remains a secret to most
visitors, making it one of the quietest spots to experience
this ancient marvel and its seemingly endless beauty. Wild
and rugged Badaling is located southwest of the
rebuilt but touristy
part of Badaling, one of Beijing's best-known and
most visited section of Great Wall. Unrestored Badaling,
however, offers a more off-the-beaten-track, non-touristy
way to experience part of the monumental feat of
engineering.
Following our visit to the Badaling Great Wall we will have
a traditional Chinese lunch at the Jade Art Restaurant,
which is just nearby the Badaling Great Wall.
After making the drive back into the city, we will arrive at
the
Forbidden City, the home of the Chinese emperors for
over 400 years. The Forbidden City (known in Chinese as Gu
Gong), is the largest surviving palace complex and the
former home of
the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasty.
The Forbidden City is one of the greatest attractions in the
world. Built by the third Ming emperor from 1406-1422, the
Forbidden City served as the official residence to the
Emperor of China until the last emperor, Puyi, was forced to
evacuate in 1924. The Forbidden City is divided into two
parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where
the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The
northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with
his royal family. Consisting of 980 buildings and with 8,707
bays of rooms, the Forbidden City is the best example of
classical Chinese architecture in the world, and is a wonder
to behold.
After a few hours of touring at the Forbidden City, you will
then then have a chance to get some traditional handicrafts
and curios at a local market. Be sure to bargain hard,
because you can often get something at half the asking
price. Our guide will give you a hand!
During the late afternoon/early evening, you will be dropped
off back at your hotel, ending your full day of taking in
the finest sights of Beijing, if not all of China!
