Our car or minivan will pick you up anywhere within the
3rd ring road, probably between the times of 8:00 - 8:30
am. From your pick up point we will drive directly to
the Jinshanling Great Wall. The drive should take a
little over 2.5 hours. When we arrive in Jinshanling,
the driver will park the vehicle in the parking lot
outside the entry gate. From there, you'll walk to the
gate, buy entry tickets and start your Jinshanling hike
for about 2-3 hours (3 hours max).
Much of the wall at Jinshanling is restored and the
surface smooth. Jinshanling has five main passes and 67
watchtowers. Every 100 meters (328 feet), there is an
enemy tower each of which is about ten meters (33 feet)
high. Featuring various structures and having various
functions, those watchtowers are either one tiered or
two-tiered. Among them, the most celebrated are the Big
and Small Jinshan Watchtowers.
However, we don't wish for you to go too far ahead,
because once you walk beyond the restored portion, there
will be potential danger, as much of the Great Wall is
in a dilapidated state. Some of the ground is not on
good footing, which could potentially cause injury.
You can walk toward Simatai West and make a U-turn when
you have hiked 1.5 hours, or 5 watch towers. You should
not hike any further because you will have difficulty
getting back to the driver in time. For your safety, we
again emphasize that you please restrict your hike
within the restored portion of the Great Wall at
Jinshanling. As this is a self-guided tour we highly
recommend that you bring the necessary supplies you'll
need on your hike. This includes water and suitable
clothes. Please bear in mind that the driver speaks
little English, so if any problem arises please call our
office if there is any misunderstanding with the driver.
After your hike, the driver will send you back to your
hotel (airport or train station). As there is no guide
and the driver takes all responsibility for those on the
tour, a small tip would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you for your patience and understanding!
