🏯 Great Wall Hiking Travel Guide

Dear Traveler, welcome to your Great Wall hiking journey!
To ensure your trip is safe, smooth, and enjoyable, please read the following guidelines carefully and prepare in advance.

1. Before Departure

  • ✅ Mobile Payment: Please install WeChat Pay or Alipay in advance. China has largely become a cashless society. Carrying cash is inconvenient, and many places no longer accept it.

  • ✅ Identification: Always carry your passport or valid ID for checks and emergencies.

  • ✅ Insurance: Tour fees only include guide and transfer services, not travel insurance. Please purchase your own policy or consider our PICC accident insurance.

2. Recommended Items to Bring

  • 🍞 Snacks or light lunch: Sandwiches, energy bars, etc., to replenish energy during the hike.

  • 👕 Change of clothes: At least one clean T-shirt (you will sweat during the hike).

  • ☂️ Rain gear: Umbrella or raincoat—check the weather forecast in advance.

  • 🧴 Toiletries: Towel, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrush & toothpaste, mouthwash, toilet paper, slippers, hairdryer.

  • 🧒 Children’s items: Bring anything your kids might need.

  • 💊 Basic medicines: Band-aids, painkillers, etc.

  • 🥾 Hiking poles: Helpful but not necessary.

3. Itinerary

🚐 One-Day Hike

  • Travel from Beijing to the Great Wall takes around 2–3 hours one way; longer on holidays due to traffic.

  • Please avoid planning tight evening activities on the same day.

  • We recommend starting at 7:00 AM to avoid rush hour.

  • In summer, since days are longer, you may also start around 9:00 AM for a more relaxed schedule.

🛏 Overnight Hike & Camping

  • May–October: Depart at 9:30–10:00 AM to avoid rush hour. You’ll rest at the base before starting the hike with your guide.

  • November–April: Depart at 7:00 AM to get out of Beijing before rush hour.

  • Avoiding traffic saves time and ensures a smoother journey.

⛺ Camping Details

  • Campsites are usually at Gubeikou or Jiankou, depending on your program.

  • After arrival, staff will serve dinner. Afterwards, you’ll return to the Wall to camp overnight.

  • Early the next morning (around 4–5 AM), staff will help pack up tents, giving you enough time to enjoy the sunrise over the Great Wall.

  • Return to Beijing by 4:00 PM on the final day. If you plan to continue to another city (such as taking a night train to Xi’an), please arrange departures in the evening.

4. Weather Tips

  • ☀️ May–October: Midday sun can be strong—prepare sun protection. Breezes are common on the Wall.

  • ❄️ November–April: It gets very cold in the mountains—bring heavy winter clothing (like what you’d wear in New York or Toronto in January).

5. Safety & Notes

  • ⚡ Thunderstorms are frequent in summer—please turn off your phone during lightning, as using it may be dangerous.

  • 🌩️ In case of lightning, thunderstorms, or heavy rain, camping on the Wall will be cancelled. Instead, you will stay overnight at our Camping Center Hotel for safety.

  • 📶 Mobile coverage is limited—avoid hiking alone, look after one another.

  • 🧱 Some sections of the Wall are broken or loose—walk with care.

  • 🚻 Toilets are available only at the mountain base (entrance points), and are very basic. Bring your own toilet paper.

6. Environmental Protection

  • 🌱 Hiking principles:

    • Leave nothing but footprints.

    • Take nothing but photos and your trash.

  • ♻️ Trash is disposed of responsibly (burned, buried, or given to livestock). Batteries must be taken back to the city or your home country.

  • 🙏 Please respect local culture and the environment while traveling.

7. Local Villages & Interaction

  • 🎁 During multi-day treks, you may pass through rural villages. If you wish, you can prepare small gifts (clothes, toys, pens, stickers, balloons) for children—please consult your guide first.

  • 💰 Tipping for farmhouse stays is not required, but always appreciated.

8. Accommodation (for multi-day treks)

  • 🏡 You’ll stay at certified farmotels—clean and safe. Some have modern amenities such as hotel-standard beds, private bathrooms, and flat-screen TVs.

  • 🚿 Since these are in rural areas, certain amenities may be limited. Please bring your own toiletries and essentials.

✨ We hope your Great Wall hiking journey will not only let you experience the grandeur of history and nature, but also leave you with unforgettable memories. Enjoy your adventure!
