💡 Tipping in China
China is generally a gratuity-free country. Locals do not tip in restaurants, hotels, or taxis, and service charges are already included in bills. In everyday life, offering cash tips may even feel unusual or confusing to staff.
That said, sometimes people show appreciation through a small “Red Pocket” (红包) sent digitally via WeChat or Alipay. For example, if you especially enjoyed a taxi ride, you might choose to send a token amount as a gesture of thanks.
In the tourism industry, however, expectations are different. Tour guides and drivers who serve international travelers often rely on gratuities as part of their income. This is especially true for our hiking guides, who usually work harder and longer hours than city guides—navigating trails, ensuring your safety, and enhancing your adventure experience. In these cases, a gratuity is both customary and warmly appreciated.
💲 Suggested Tipping Guidelines:
- Tour Guide: USD 20 (≈ CNY 150) per day
- Driver: USD 15 (≈ CNY 120) per day
