Day 1: Rail journey and the Chang family compound
Take the confirmed train from Beijing to the Pingyao area, where your guide and driver meet you. The published route allows approximately four hours for the rail journey, but the actual service and arrival station are selected for your date.
Visit the Chang family compound, a large complex associated with Shanxi’s merchant families. Courtyards, halls and decorative details offer a useful introduction to the prosperity that developed around trade in this region.
Continue to Pingyao Ancient City and check in at the accommodation arranged for your stay. In the evening, explore local food options; noodles and other wheat-based dishes are a feature of the regional cuisine.
Day 2: Walls, banks and the old commercial streets
After breakfast, visit the old city wall and explore the historic street pattern within it. Continue to Rishengchang, associated with the development of draft banking, to understand how merchants moved money across trading routes.
Walk along Ming–Qing Street and visit the Armed Escort Company Museum. Together, these stops explain both the trade that generated wealth and the services used to protect it. The former county government office adds a view of local administration and the city’s legal history.
Afternoon return to Beijing
Transfer to the station for the booked train. We plan the final sightseeing around the departure time so the return connection is part of the itinerary rather than an afterthought.
